BANGLADESH ENVIRONMENT NETWORK (BEN)
A global network to assist Bangladesh in protecting her environment

On behalf of Bangladesh Environment Network (BEN), it is my pleasure to invite you to attend the Third International Conference on Bangladesh Environment (ICBEN) to be held in Dhaka on January 2-3, 2010.

The conference is organized by Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) and Bangladesh Environment Network (BEN), a global network of non-resident Bangladeshis, in association with the major universities and other pro-environment organizations of Bangladesh. The goal of the conference is to take stock of the environment situation of Bangladesh and to chart out the course of action for the future.

Honorable Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina is expected to be the Chief Guest at the Opening Session of the conference, while Leader of the Opposition is expected to be the Chief Guest at the Closing Session. Many other ministers and dignitaries from abroad are expected to attend the conference. A significant number of non-resident Bangladeshi experts and activists will join their resident counterparts at this conference.

Since the Second ICBEN was held in 2002, Bangladesh has had some success in protection of environment. However, in general, the quality of environment has further deteriorated, and meanwhile climate change has emerged as an overwhelming challenge. ICBEN 2010 will bring together experts and activists from both within and outside Bangladesh in order to have a thorough discussion of the environmental and climate challenges and to formulate appropriate recommendations.

The conference will have a dual format, with “Expert Sessions” for presentation of papers by experts and “General Sessions” for discussion by activists, policy makers, leaders of political parties, non-government, and mass organizations. The conference will end by synthesizing the analyses and recommendations offered in its different sessions in the form of the Dhaka Declaration on Bangladesh environment 2010 to be adopted at the Concluding Session.

In addition to the sessions, the conference will have exhibition, displaying both instances of environmental degradation and good examples of conservation and environment protection, children’s art competition, students’ debate competition, and cultural programs featuring environmental themes.

We hope that you will be able to join ICBEN 2010. Please contact me for further information.

Best regards, Dr. Nazrul Islam Global Coordinator, BEN; (E-mail: s_n_islam@yahoo.com)
